THE INAUGURAL HANGING OF
THE NEW DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BLVD STREET SIGNS
took place last Saturday, June 5th with SCLC and other celebrants in the broad coalition, at the intersection of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and The Paseo.
We marked this historic victory as a sign of peace and justice in our City and community.
The "21 Days of Peace" initiative will kick off this Sunday, June 13th and is purposed to call our community to a cease fire and beseech us to seek non-violent pathways for conflict resolution.
Please stay tuned for more information about this important initiative and how you can be a part of bringing our community to a cease fire!
FRIDAY, JUNE 4TH - 6PM
SCLC marched and protested against the continued racism and police brutality afflicted upon Kansas Citians by the KCPD.
We will continue to stand in a non-violent direct action protest with victims of police brutality and Friday Night Protest leaders. We continue our years long fight for justice, "real" reform, the dismissal of the Chief of Police, and an end to the killing of unarmed Black men in Kansas City.
The SCLC-GKC stands in full support of Bishop Frank Douglas and Family and for justice and accountability for their son Cameron Douglas. Cameron was shot multiple times and killed approximately two years ago. The Douglas family reports to us that barriers are being presented to them in the process of receiving justice. These barriers are causing Bishop Douglas and his family compounded grief and heartache. We are demanding the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office Proceed with the trial without delay. Let us stand with them!"
SCLC-GKC received from the Office of the Mayor to participate in a proposed meeting which was to focus upon ensuring order in the community in anticipation of the Chauvin verdict. As you will discover in your reading of this statement, we rejected this meeting because participating in such a proposed meeting would compromise our efforts to continue demanding the reforms necessary to halt the killing and brutality of our people here in Kansas City by the KCPD.
Furthermore, participating in such a meeting along with the KCPD Chief and other clergy who were also invited by the Mayor, and who are aligned in support of the Chief and the racism/police brutality currently the norm, would have sent a harmful message to the constituencies for whom we are defending and fighting.
These were decisions made based upon the enduring SCLC mission and vision. Our pre-existing and bedrock principles of loyalty and solidarity with the victims of Civil Rights violations and police brutality, as always, has guided us.

Long live the dream, and the fulfillment, of justice, peace, and the beloved community!
On behalf of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City (SCLC-GKC) and the Kansas City for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd National Coalition, this note comes to thank you for your enduring support and commitment in helping make a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd a reality here in KCMO.
Tuesday, April 13, 2021, the KCMO Parks Board Commissioners approved the resolution to rename the Blue Parkway/Swope Parkway/Volker Blvd corridor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd. This long awaited, anticipated victory would not have occurred had it not been for your support and dedication to make this historic success possible.
SCLC-GKC is honored to have partnered with so many justice seeking, peace making individuals and groups to help make this victory a reality.
Thank you for the invaluable support and contribution you and your organizations made to this historic victory in Kansas City and to the ongoing work of SCLC-GKC.
Long live the dream, and the fulfillment, of justice, peace, and the beloved community!

The SCLC-GKC MLK Mass Virtual Celebration
The Mass Celebration this year featured U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver II, D-5th MO who led a panel discussion with three influential and high-profile Congressional leaders who hail from congressional districts representing voters which turned the nation in the November election. We honored persons in the Kansas City community who,
in the spirit of Dr. King, have made significant contributions towards the continued advance of justice work!
